Aquadom Update: Radisson Berlin Swaps Sea Life for Plant Life
After the headline-making burst of its massive AquaDom aquarium in December 2022, the Radisson Hotel Collection in Berlin has taken a green turn with a surprising yet inspiring remodel plan. Instead of rebuilding the once-iconic aquarium, the hotel has decided to install a towering vertical garden. The new installation, aptly named the "Living Tree," will not just be a pretty sight but also a nod to eco-friendly practices and architectural innovation.
A Green Masterpiece in the Making
Scheduled for completion this summer, the "Living Tree" will stretch up to the sixth floor of the hotel, transforming the atrium with a lush expanse of 2,000 plants from 22 different species. Spanning approximately 120 square meters, the vertical garden is designed to mimic the shape of a tree, adding a touch of nature's serenity to the urban hotel setting. Union Investment, the hotel's owner, promises that this botanical feature will improve indoor air quality and create a calming atmosphere for guests and visitors alike.
Eco-friendly and Stylish
The vertical garden is not just about aesthetics; it's a significant step towards sustainability. By incorporating the remnants of the former aquarium's base into the new design, the hotel is reducing waste and the carbon footprint associated with demolition. This approach underlines a commitment to environmental responsibility—a growing trend in urban design where sustainability is as crucial as style.
Anticipating the Grand Reopening
With the hotel set to reopen its doors by the end of the year, the new garden will likely become a landmark in its own right. It represents a shift towards integrating natural elements into urban spaces, a movement that's gaining momentum across global cities. The Radisson's initiative could inspire other businesses to think creatively about using their spaces to promote environmental health and sustainability.
The Radisson Blu's transformation from an aquarium-centered attraction to a verdant vertical garden is more than just a renovation; it's a reimagining of urban space that Berliners and tourists alike will watch with keen interest. This ambitious project promises to turn a place of past calamities into a peaceful, green sanctuary in the heart of the city.
