Brace Yourself: Coffee Prices in Germany to Spike 30% in 2025
Germany is bracing for a significant coffee price hike in 2025, as coffee distributors predict that ground coffee prices could rise by at least 30%, with organic and fair trade varieties facing even sharper increases. This development is attributed to several global factors, including the impacts of climate change on coffee-producing nations and rising global demand.

Climatic and Economic Pressures
The volatility in the raw coffee market has been a primary driver of price hikes. According to Johannes Dengler of Dallmayr, one of Germany’s largest coffee distributors, raw coffee prices have soared by 70% since early 2024, reaching over 320 US cents per pound—the highest since 1977. Dengler warns, “A price shock is coming, and we’re likely to see rates near 350 US cents per pound soon.”
Key coffee exporters, including Brazil and Vietnam, are grappling with declining harvests due to extreme weather conditions like droughts. Brazilian Arabica production, a staple for many blends, has notably suffered, with production expectations dropping due to poor yields and deforestation challenges. Additionally, extended transportation times around critical global trade routes have exacerbated supply issues.
The German Coffee Landscape
Coffee remains a staple in Germany, with the average citizen consuming four cups daily, according to the German Coffee Association. Prices for a 500-gram packet of coffee, currently hovering around 5 euros in discount supermarkets, are expected to climb to at least 6.50 euros. Meanwhile, organic and fair trade options could see price jumps of up to 50%. Café visits may also feel the pinch, with cappuccinos and “Milchkaffee” cups potentially costing around 20 cents more per serving, pushing prices closer to 4 euros.
Wider Implications on the Beverage Industry
The coffee sector isn’t alone in facing challenges. A study by the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences reveals that Germany’s hop yields—a crucial ingredient in beer—are also declining due to prolonged dry spells and climate shifts. By 2050, European hop yields could drop by 15% if current farming practices don’t adapt, threatening Germany’s beer production and possibly altering taste profiles.
Seeking Solutions
As climate change reshapes agricultural landscapes, both producers and consumers must adapt. Initiatives promoting sustainable farming practices and innovative trade policies are critical to stabilizing coffee and other commodity markets. For coffee lovers, supporting fair trade and sustainable brands may become not only an ethical choice but a financial strategy to sustain their favorite beverage amidst soaring prices.
