Criminality in Görli: Is Fencing Off the Real Solution?
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner’s plan to fence off Görlitzer Park has stirred up a lot of tension and uncertainty. He wants to fence it off and close it at night, aiming to curb crime in the area. However, many locals believe this idea will backfire, shifting problems elsewhere and not really fixing anything. The project will cost about €2 million and include building a new fence and fixing the old perimeter wall.
Criticism and Allegations of Misinformation
Wegner has taken heat for allegedly using incorrect stats and calling Central Park in New York City a guiding example, even though it doesn’t have a comparable fence. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg’s Green district mayor Clara Herrmann has been vocal about her opposition, saying that the fence will simply push problems into neighboring areas instead of addressing underlying issues like homelessness, drug addiction, and inequality. “If fences could cure crack addiction, the US would be full of them,” Green politician Antje Kapek pointed out.
Community Resistance
Activist group Wrangelkiez United says Wegner's plan is just a band-aid solution and insists that the focus should be on social support, healthcare, and community programs. They argue, “Women and their experiences of violence are instrumentalized for racist law & order campaigns. But this is not about women and security but about racist displacement, repressive migration policies, and gentrification.” Their stance is backed up by past failed attempts at increased policing and “hotspot units,” which just made things worse by escalating tensions and shifting issues around.
Wegner’s Commitment and Response
Despite the criticism, Wegner is sticking with his plan, acknowledging that social programs could be helpful but not providing specifics. He insists that if the fence doesn’t work after a year, they’ll remove it. “We’ll carefully evaluate how long the fence needs to stay up,” Wegner says, but delays due to legal wrangling have slowed the process. Still, he’s pushing for the fence to go up “as quickly as possible.”
Broader Strategy Debate
Critics think the fence won’t work unless it's part of a bigger strategy to address root causes. They want investment in comprehensive public health, social services, and legal reforms to address the deeper problems that lead to crime and drug use. This debate highlights the clash between quick security measures and real community support, leaving Berliners divided on how to best handle the challenges at Görlitzer Park.
