Train Services Get an Upgrade
Rail travel is getting a significant boost as Deutsche Bahn introduces its winter timetable on December 15th. The Riedbahn, connecting Frankfurt and Mannheim, reopens after months of renovations, restoring normal services. The Berlin-Hamburg route will also return to its usual two-hour journey, saving travelers 45 minutes previously lost due to diversions.
A new direct train between Berlin and Paris launches on December 16th, taking around eight hours and adding an attractive option for travel to the French capital. Other highlights include reduced travel times between Berlin and Frankfurt (four hours) and more frequent connections on key routes.
However, not all news is cheerful—ticket prices for flex fares and commuter passes will rise by an average of 5.9%, though saver fares remain unchanged.
USB-C Standardization for Devices
From December 28th, all new electronic devices sold in the EU must include a USB-C charging port. This move, aimed at reducing electronic waste, ensures a single charger works across multiple devices.
Tax Relief Brings a Paycheck Boost
Employees could see a slight increase in their December net income. The basic tax-free allowance rises to €11,784, with retroactive effect from January 2024. Families also benefit, with the child tax-free allowance increasing to €6,612. These changes aim to provide modest financial relief amidst rising living costs.
Plan Ahead for Festive Closures
Christmas Day (December 25th) and Boxing Day (December 26th) are public holidays across Germany, with most businesses and shops closed. Many companies also close early on Christmas Eve. Plan your shopping and gift deliveries accordingly—letters and packages sent domestically should reach their destinations if posted by December 20th or 21st.

Longer Days Are Coming
December 21st marks the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. From December 22nd onward, the days will gradually become longer—a small but welcome reprieve during the dark winter months.
Rising Costs of Christmas Trees
Inflation has increased the price of Christmas trees, with Nordmann firs costing between €22 and €30 per meter. Local sellers often offer a charming holiday experience, so consider supporting these businesses.
School and Kita Holidays Begin
Winter holidays for schools and kindergartens (Kitas) vary by state but generally start on December 23rd. Some regions, such as Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, begin their breaks earlier.
December in Germany encapsulates change, from infrastructure improvements to holiday traditions. Stay informed to make the most of this busy month.
