JUNE 2024: Germany Introduces Opportunity Card to Entice Non-EU Workers
Germany has launched the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), a new visa scheme designed to attract skilled workers from outside the EU. As of June 1, 2024, eligible individuals can move to Germany and seek employment for up to a year, addressing the country's acute shortage of skilled labor.

Key Features of the Opportunity Card
Eligibility Criteria:
Vocational Training or University Degree: Applicants must have at least two years of vocational training or a university degree recognized in the country where it was obtained.
Language Skills: Knowledge of German (A1 level) or English (B2 level).
Points System: Eligibility is determined by a points system, considering language skills, professional experience, age, and ties to Germany. A minimum of six points is required.

Where to Apply: Applications can be submitted at the Foreigners' Registration Office in Germany or the German mission abroad (e.g., embassies).
Points Distribution: Points are awarded for qualifications, professional experience, language proficiency, age, and previous stays in Germany.
Advantages for Non-EU Workers:
Fast Entry: Eliminates the need for a job contract prior to entering Germany.
Temporary Residence: Allows a 12-month stay to search for employment.
Work Permit: Permits up to 20 hours per week in part-time or trial jobs during the job search period.
Path to Permanent Residence: Potential to extend the stay and switch to a full-time job once employment is secured.
Income Opportunities: Part-time employment at minimum wage (€12 per hour) can secure sufficient income to support oneself during the job search.

Expanded opportunities for job seekers from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
Up to 50,000 nationals from these countries can access the German labor market without professional qualifications, though a job contract is required.
