December is here, bringing with it a flurry of changes and events that expats and locals in Berlin and across Germany should be aware of. From adjustments in public transport timetables to changes in healthcare policies, here's what you need to know as we approach the end of the year.
1. Deutsche Bahn's New Timetable and Fare Increases
Starting December 10, Deutsche Bahn will switch to its new 2024 timetable, offering faster and more frequent connections between major cities. Notably, the Berlin-Cologne and Berlin-Munich high-speed lines will see increased regularity. However, this comes with a price hike: an average increase of 4.9% for Flex price tickets and BahnCards. Additionally, the convenient CityTicket option will be discontinued.
2. Possible Deutsche Bahn Strikes
Travelers should brace for potential disruptions due to anticipated strikes by the GDL trade union. The exact dates are not confirmed, but these strikes could significantly impact long-distance train services, especially during the holiday season.
3. End of Energy Price Cap
Germany's temporary energy price cap policy, introduced following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will end on December 31. This means a rise in gas and electricity costs for households, with the government no longer subsidizing the rates.
4. Utility Bills Deadline
Landlords have until December 31 to issue 2022 utility bills to tenants. Due to the increased energy prices, tenants might face higher bills this year. It's advisable to check these bills thoroughly upon receipt.
5. Sick Notes via Phone
From December 7, Germans might be able to obtain sick leave notes by phone, a convenience initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. This change, however, is pending final legislative approval.
6. Pay Rise for Care Workers
Starting December 1, care workers in Germany will receive a pay increase. The minimum wage for care workers will rise to between €14.15 and €18.25 per hour, varying by qualification level.
7. Higher Tolls for Lorries
In an effort to combat climate change, a new toll surcharge will be implemented from December 1 for lorries on motorways, based on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted.
8. New Labeling for Wine and Sekt
Starting December 8, wine and sparkling wine producers must include nutritional information and ingredient lists on their labels, as per new EU regulations.
9. Google to Deactivate Inactive Accounts
Google will begin deleting inactive accounts from December. An account is considered inactive if it hasn't been used for two years. Users will receive multiple notifications before their account is deleted.
10. Christmas Postal Deadlines
For those sending holiday greetings within Germany, Deutsche Post recommends sending letters by December 21 and packages by December 20 to ensure timely delivery.
Additional Notes:
School Holidays: Different German states have varying holiday schedules, so be sure to check local dates.
Public Holidays: December 25 and 26 are nationwide public holidays, with early closures expected on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Firework Precautions: On New Year's Eve, expect widespread use of fireworks. Pet owners should take necessary precautions.
