MARCH 2024: The Key Changes in Germany
As the spring sun breaks through the chill of winter, Germany is set to introduce a series of significant changes affecting expats and residents alike. From new laws aimed at easing the process for skilled workers to come to Germany, to adjustments in public health insurance contributions, here’s what you need to know for March 2024.
1. New Skilled Worker Law Takes Effect
Starting March 1, the second phase of Germany's skilled worker law goes into effect, simplifying the process for skilled workers from non-EU countries. With a recognized degree or vocational qualification and two years of relevant experience, opportunities in Germany are broadening. This includes easing the path for IT specialists and nursing staff from third-state countries.
2. Mandatory Time Tracking for Workers
A ruling from Germany’s Federal Labour Court mandates all employees to log their working hours daily starting March 4. This move, aimed at ensuring fair work practices, requires employers to implement a time tracking system.
3. Adjustments in Health Insurance Contributions
Pensioners will see an increase in health insurance contributions from March 1. This follows a previous increase for employees at the year's start, impacting the net pension amount received.
4. New Number Plates for Small Vehicles
Owners of mopeds, e-bikes, and scooters capable of reaching up to 45 km/h must update their number plates to the new blue color starting March 1, as part of an annual update.
5. Organ Donor Registration Goes Online
Making organ donation easier, Germany introduces an online registration system from March 18. This aims to increase the 44% of residents already registered as organ donors.
6. Stricter Energy Consumption Standards
New efficiency requirements for household appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and dryers kick in from March 1. Expect to see clear indications of energy consumption on these devices, encouraging smarter purchases.
7. Relaunch of the Youth Culture Pass
The KulturPass for 18-year-olds, offering €100 for cultural activities, is back from March 1. Eligible teens can activate their pass using the Kultur-Pass App.
8. International Women’s Day and Easter Celebrations
March shines a spotlight on International Women’s Day in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, along with early Easter holidays, promising public holidays and celebrations across the country.
9. Salary Boost for Public Sector Employees
Starting March, public sector employees will enjoy a pay rise, with a basic increase of €200 plus 5.5 percent, amounting to at least €340 more per month.
10. Daylight Saving Time Returns
Bid farewell to winter gloom as daylight saving time begins on March 31, setting the clocks forward by an hour for longer evenings.
