Steuererklärung Deadline on September 2
The deadline to submit your 2023 tax return (Steuererklärung) was Monday, September 2, 2024. This deadline is crucial for those who are required to file, such as freelancers, self-employed individuals, or those with multiple sources of income. Missing the deadline can result in fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros, depending on your income and specific circumstances. If you were unable to submit on time, there’s still an option to request an extension, but you must act quickly and provide a valid reason to your local Finanzamt. Remember, even if you’re not legally obligated to file, submitting a tax return could result in a refund, which can be a pleasant surprise!
Back to School in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria
September 9th marks the return to school for students in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, the last two states in Germany to resume after the summer holidays. This period can be hectic for families as they adjust back to school routines. It’s also a time when traffic increases significantly, especially in school zones, so it’s essential to drive carefully. Additionally, parents should ensure that their children’s vaccinations are up to date and that they’re prepared for the school year ahead. Schools in these regions may have different policies regarding COVID-19, so checking with your child’s school for specific guidelines is advised.
State Elections in Thuringia, Saxony, and Brandenburg
This September, three eastern German states are holding critical state elections (Landtagswahlen), with Thuringia and Saxony already voting on September 1st, and Brandenburg’s election coming up on September 22nd. These elections are especially significant as they could reshape the political landscape in these regions, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) expected to perform strongly. If you’re an eligible voter (over 18 and holding a German passport), participating in these elections is your chance to have a say in your state’s future. Even if you can’t vote, it’s important to stay informed about the results, as they can influence regional and national policies that affect all residents, including expats. As one observer noted, “the upcoming elections could mark a significant shift in the political dynamics of these regions, potentially impacting local governance and policies.”
Homeowners Can Submit Heat Pump Installation Invoices
Homeowners who have installed environmentally friendly heat pumps can now submit their invoices to the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) to receive government subsidies. This is part of Germany’s ongoing effort to transition away from gas heating systems to more sustainable alternatives under the new Heizungsgesetz (Heating Law). If you’re a single-family homeowner and live in the property you own, this is your opportunity to get financial support for your eco-friendly investment. The document assessment period takes about a month, so submitting your invoices promptly is advisable to avoid delays. For those considering switching to a heat pump, now is a great time to explore the available subsidies and plan your installation.
100ml Liquid Limit Returns at German Airports
If you’re planning to travel by air, be aware that the 100ml liquid restriction for carry-on luggage has been reinstated as of September 1st across all German airports. This restriction, temporarily reintroduced by the European Commission, applies to all liquids, gels, and aerosols, which must be stored in containers of no more than 100ml and placed in a resealable plastic bag. This measure is due to concerns about the reliability of Explosive Detection Systems currently in use. While some airports had started phasing out this rule thanks to advanced scanners, the limit is back for the time being, so double-check your luggage before heading to the airport to avoid any inconvenience during security checks. As stated in the official press release, the liquid limit is being “temporarily enforced to ensure safety at EU Airports utilizing Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB).”
Warntag on September 12
On September 12th at 11 AM, Germany will conduct a nationwide test of its emergency warning systems, known as Warntag. This test is part of a broader effort to improve the country’s disaster preparedness, especially in light of recent events like floods and forest fires. The warning will be broadcasted through various channels, including sirens, mobile alerts, and announcements on radio and TV. It’s essential to familiarize yourself with these alerts, as they are crucial for staying safe during real emergencies. In addition to the mobile alerts, some areas may also test sirens, which can be startling if you’re not expecting them. Make sure you and your family are aware of the test to avoid unnecessary panic.
Deutsche Bahn Drops Long-Distance Reservation Requirements
Good news for frequent travelers: as of September 1st, Deutsche Bahn has removed the mandatory seat reservation requirement on long-distance trains, a policy that was temporarily introduced during the busy Euro 2024 football tournament. This means you can now hop on a long-distance train without needing to reserve a seat in advance, although it’s still recommended if you want to guarantee a specific spot, especially during peak travel times. However, be aware that the Munich-Zurich route still requires reservations until October 5th. This change is part of Deutsche Bahn’s efforts to make travel more flexible and convenient, catering to the needs of passengers who prefer spontaneity in their travel plans.
Organ Donor Registration via Health Insurance Apps
Starting September 30th, residents of Germany over the age of 16 can register their decision to become an organ donor directly through their health insurance provider’s app. This is part of a broader initiative to simplify the process and increase the number of registered organ donors in the country. Since the introduction of online registration in March 2024, there has been a significant increase in the number of donors, reflecting a positive shift in public attitudes towards organ donation. Registering through the app is quick and secure, allowing you to make a potentially life-saving decision with just a few clicks. This change makes it easier than ever to contribute to this vital cause. “The digital registration process has already seen nearly 100,000 new donors sign up in its first month,” noted a representative from the health ministry.
S-Bahn Link to Berlin Airport Closes
Travelers using Berlin’s BER Airport should be aware that starting at 10 PM on September 13th, the S-Bahn lines S9 and S45, which connect the city center to the airport, will be suspended for maintenance work. This disruption will last until mid-November, impacting those who rely on these lines for easy access to the airport. During this period, alternative routes such as the Airport Express (FEX) and regional trains will be available, offering faster connections to and from the city center. It’s advisable to plan your journey in advance, especially if you have a flight to catch, and consider leaving a bit earlier to account for any potential delays caused by the maintenance work.
Deadline for Submitting Financials for COVID-19 Aid
For those who received COVID-19 economic aid, the deadline to submit your financial documentation is approaching at the end of September. This process is necessary to reconcile the aid you received with your actual financial situation during the pandemic, ensuring that the correct amount was awarded. Depending on the outcome, you may need to make repayments or could be eligible for additional back-dated aid. Make sure all your documents are in order and submitted on time to avoid complications. If you’re unsure about what’s required, it may be worth consulting with a financial advisor to ensure everything is correct.
R44 Child Car Seats Banned from Sale
As of September 1st, the sale of R44 model child car seats is prohibited in Germany. These seats, which no longer meet the latest safety standards, can still be used if you already own one, but retailers are now barred from selling them. If you’re in the market for a new car seat, make sure to look for the newer R129 (i-Size) models, which provide better protection for your child in the event of an accident. These newer models are designed with advanced safety features, including improved side-impact protection and mandatory rear-facing for younger children.
Oktoberfest Kicks Off on September 21
Finally, the world’s most famous folk festival, Oktoberfest, returns to Munich on September 21st. This year’s event promises all the traditional attractions, including beer tents, amusement rides, and parades. Oktoberfest is not just about the beer; it’s a cultural experience that draws millions of visitors from around the globe. If you plan to attend, consider booking your accommodation and transportation well in advance, as Munich will be bustling with activity. Whether you’re a seasoned Oktoberfest veteran or a first-timer, there’s something for everyone at this iconic event. Prost! As one regular attendee famously said, “How many million liters of beer will be drunk? How many sausages will be eaten? Watch this space.”
