STEP BY STEP: How to Register to the New Organ Donation System in Germany
Germany has introduced a significant update to its organ donation system, aiming to streamline the process and enhance transparency for both potential donors and recipients. As of today, Germany's new online Organ Donation Register is live at www.organspende-register.de. This digital platform is designed to complement the traditional paper-based organ donor cards by offering an easily accessible, secure, and straightforward way for individuals to register their willingness to donate organs posthumously.
The register allows people to record their decision regarding organ donation using an online ID and PIN (eID) initially, with plans to incorporate a Health ID option between July and September. This service is voluntary, free of charge, and can be modified or retracted at any time. Managed by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, the data stored in the register are securely kept within Germany and can only be accessed by authorized hospital staff.
Previously, the expression of one's organ donation preference was primarily through a card carried in one's wallet. However, this method had its limitations, including the potential for loss or the card not being on hand when needed. The introduction of this digital register not only addresses these concerns but also aims to alleviate the decision-making burden on relatives during critical moments.
Comparatively, organ donation registers are not a novel concept in Europe. For instance, Denmark has had a register since 2010, with 28% of its citizens over 15 years old registered by the end of last year. The UK and the Netherlands have also implemented similar systems, each with its own set of rules regarding voluntary or mandatory registration. Despite these efforts, countries with registers, including Switzerland, which suspended its register due to security concerns, have not necessarily seen a significant increase in donor numbers, highlighting the complexity of encouraging organ donation solely through such systems.
The new register in Germany represents an effort to simplify the process of indicating one's organ donation preference and ensuring that such decisions are respected and accessible when most needed. While it offers a streamlined and secure way for individuals to express their organ donation wishes, the effect of this register on organ donation rates in Germany remains to be seen.
