IWB Reflects on Fireworks in Berlin for the New Year's Celebrations
Hey IWBies! As 2023 is approaching its grand finale, Berlin's skyline is getting ready to put on its annual pyrotechnic dance. But as we edge closer to 2024, let's chat about what that spectacle means for our streets, our furry friends and even for our safety.
Traditions: The Old and New
Fireworks are synonymous with celebration, a time-honored tradition that lights up the transition from old to new. Yet, as we embrace the future, it's worth pondering how we carry forward the customs that shape our celebrations. Could the incoming year be a turning point where we redefine festivity in Berlin?
There's an ongoing debate about the need for stricter regulations and safety measures to mitigate the following risks for the next years.

Others as well, but with some considerations:
After the Party: A Call for Clean Streets
Fact is that fireworks contribute significantly to air pollution, releasing a large amount of fine particulate matter, which has detrimental effects on air quality and public health. The cleanup after these celebrations is substantial, with the city's sanitation department facing a laborious task of collecting firework remnants, including potentially toxic materials. The environmental impact extends beyond litter, as some components of fireworks can be harmful to both humans and animals if they enter the body or the soil, contributing to broader ecological issues.
Safety in the Skies and on the Streets
New Year's Eve in Berlin is known for its chaotic celebrations, with a temporary lift on the ban against certain fireworks. This period has seen significant safety issues, including injuries from firecrackers, damage to property, and attacks on emergency services. The aftermath often includes serious injuries, necessitating hospital visits and, in some cases, amputations or severe burns.
A Consideration for Refugees
New Year's Eve fireworks can have a significant impact on refugees who have fled war-torn areas. The loud explosions may trigger traumatic memories or PTSD symptoms, reminding them of gunshots and bombs from their experiences.
Furry Friends and Fireworks
The loud noises from fireworks are particularly distressing for animals, perceived much louder by them than by humans. This can lead to stress, panic, and, in some cases, fatal accidents for pets and wildlife. Birds can become disoriented, deer may run into traffic, and domestic pets can suffer from anxiety or even physical harm. Animal welfare organisations advocate for quieter and kinder New Year’s celebrations and suggest practical steps to protect animals, such as alternatives to traditional fireworks, like soap bubbles or laser beams.
New Ways to Celebrate
As we look ahead, let's consider alternative celebrations that embrace joy without the noise. Whether it's laser light displays, community potlucks, or city-wide dance parties, there are endless ways to ring in the new year that can be inclusive, safe, and just as thrilling.
